At long last, America has a new Speaker of the House.
Rep. Kevin McCarthy of California was elected as Speaker in a dramatic late-night vote, bringing an end to a four day long revolt from his right flank, and finally capture the gavel on the 15th vote. McCarthy secured the position by a slim majority–216 votes, with six Republican holdouts voting present.
212 Democrats voted for Hakeem Jeffries.
During his victory speech, McCarthy outlined some of the legislation he plans to take up as Speaker of the House.
“Our very first bill will repeal the funding for 87,000 new IRS agents,” McCarthy told the packed house chamber.
