Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg has been detained while taking part in a demonstration against the expansion of a coal mine in Luetzerath, an abandoned village in western Germany.

The 20-year-old Thunberg and thousands of other protesters have been demonstrating against the planned expansion of the mine since last Wednesday, claiming it would result in huge amounts of greenhouse gas emissions. The demonstrations have led to several standoffs with German police.
According to the Associated Press, organizers said about 35,000 people took part in the protests, while police put the figure at up to 10,000.
