Chicago’s mayor-elect Brandon Johnson is doubling down on his support for vandals and rioters, telling lawmakers that the teenagers responsible deserve “sympathy.” Johnson stated that it is wrong to demonize children, and that the city must keep them safe.

“Demonizing children is wrong. We have to keep them safe as well,” Johnson said on Wednesday after speaking to lawmakers.
Johnson did not provide specific plans for dealing with the threat of renewed violence this summer, but instead spoke generally about youth and their decision-making process.
“They’re young, sometimes they make silly decisions,” Johnson said. “And so we have to make sure that we’re investing so that young people know they’re supported. And we also have to make sure that police officers who put their lives on the line have the resources that they need to keep us safe.”
