Former Senator Barbara Boxer, who served the state of California for 14 years, was attacked for her cellphone in broad daylight while walking through Jack London Square in Oakland.
The assailant pushed Boxer in the back, stole her cell phone and jumped into a waiting car, according to a message posted to the Senator’s Twitter account.
“We need resources,” said Chief LaRonne Armstrong at a press conference in April. “We need the community’s help to be able to reduce violence. Police can’t do it alone.”
Chief Armstrong’s plea is falling on deaf ears.
According to a local CBS affiliate, The Oakland City Council approved a budget last month that will strip $17.4 million in funding from the Oakland Police Department and direct the money toward other programs.
