NO BUENO: First Lady Apologizes for Comparing Latinos to Tacos

First Lady Jill Biden issued an apology through her press secretary Tuesday after comparing the Latino community with Tacos.

“The First Lady apologizes that her words conveyed anything but pure admiration and love for the Latino community,” posted Press Secretary Michael LaRosa on Twitter.

Jill Biden said the Latino community was “as unique as the breakfast tacos here in San Antonio.” The tone-deaf remark immediately caught fire on social media, with “TacoGate” trending.

The National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) responded to the FLOTUS flub, saying “we are not tacos.”

The NAHJ responded that “using breakfast tacos to try to demonstrate the uniqueness of Latinos in San Antonio demonstrates a lack of cultural knowledge and sensitivity to the diversity of Latinos in the region.”

“Our heritage as Latinos is shaped by a variety of diasporas, cultures and food traditions, and should not be reduced to a stereotype,” the statement continued.
