Five innocent people are dead and at least eight wounded after a lone gunman opened fire at Old National Bank in downtown Louisville, Kentucky on Monday. Police have identified the perpetrator as a 25-year-old employee of the bank named Connor Sturgeon.
Sturgeon reportedly walked into the bank at around 8:30am on Monday before the bank was open to the public and opened fire on his colleagues with a rifle. Officers responded to the scene within minutes and exchanged gunfire with the Sturgeon, who was shot dead. Four victims died on the scene, and a fifth died later at a local hospital.
According to his LinkedIn profile, Sturgeon worked at the bank for about two years as a “syndications associate and portfolio banker” and had previously been an intern there.
Sturgeon graduated from the University of Alabama, where he earned a master of science in finance in 2020.
Although police have not yet revealed a motive for the shooting, Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg called the shooting an “evil act of targeted violence.”
Amongst those injured in Monday’s violence was 26-year-old Officer Nickolas Wilt, a rookie officer with the Louisville Police Department who was just 10 days out of the police academy. Police said Officer Wilt was one of two officers who were injured on Monday. Wilt was shot in the head and has received emergency surgery.
