At this point, it may be appropriate to ask if San Francisco is just gaslighting the rest of the country.
According to a report from The Daily Wire, (extremely) progressive San Francisco Mayor London Breed recently announced a Drag Laureate position that will be funded through the city’s budget.
The “honor” comes with a $35,000 stipend that comes out of —wait for it —the public library budget.
Smart, San Fran. Real smart.
“San Francisco’s commitment to inclusivity and the arts are the foundation for who we are as a city,” Breed stated. “Drag artists have helped pave the way for LGBTQ rights and representation across our city, and we must invest in programs that continue their legacies and create opportunities for the next generation of drag performers to thrive. I want to thank the drag community, Human Rights Commission, and Public Library for their work, and I look forward to crowning San Francisco’s first ever Drag Laureate this Fall.”
“The new drag laureate program is a fantastic way to celebrate and support San Francisco’s vibrant and beautiful drag community. Our drag performers are part of the heart and soul of our city. This new partnership with the San Francisco Public Library is a wonderful way to kick off Pride Month,” Senator Scott Wiener said.
Meanwhile, Texas and Florida are moving to pass legislation to make it illegal to bring a child to a Drag show. Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL) recently commented on the issue.
“You had this Dallas, Texas, you had these very young kids and they must have been like 9, 10 years old at a quote ‘drag show’ where they were putting money in the underwear of this and that is totally inappropriate,” DeSantis said, adding that it is “not something that children should be exposed to.”
