The Dalai Lama, the 87-year-old spiritual leader of the Tibetan people, is coming under fire after a video surfaced showing him asking a young boy to “suck my tongue” at a public event.

The Lama, who lives in exile in India, has since apologized for the incident.
“A video clip has been circulating that shows a recent meeting when a young boy asked his Holiness the Dalai Lama if he could give him a hug,” said a statement on the Dalai Lama’s twitter account. “His Holiness wishes to apologize to the boy and his family, as well as his many friends across the world, for the hurt his words may have caused.”
The statement added that the spiritual leader, “often teases people he meets in an innocent and playful way, even in public and before cameras. He regrets the incident.”
