First, Florida legislators stripped Disney of its special self-governing status. Now, the GOP is targeting Disney’s special copyright privileges; Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO) is leading the charge.
“The age of Republican handouts to Big Business is over. Thanks to special copyright protections from Congress, woke corporations like Disney have earned billions while increasingly pandering to woke activists. It’s time to take away Disney’s special privileges and open up a new era of creativity and innovation,” Hawley told Fox News Digital in an exclusive statement.
Hawley’s new legislation, the Copyright Clause Restoration Act of 2022, would “cap the length of copyrights given corporations by Congress to 56 years and retroactively implement this change on companies, including Walt Disney,” according to Fox News.
Hawley announced the new legislation on Twitter:
“No more handouts for woke corporations. Today I’m introducing legislation to strip @Disney of its special copyright protections.”
Disney stock is down nearly 40% in the last 6 months, taking a considerable dip after going toe-to-toe with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis over his Parental Rights in Education bill.
Disney is one of the worst performing stocks in the Dow Industrial Average.
