An avalanche of questions tumbled towards Dr. Anthony Fauci this week after several newspapers reported Chinese scientists were stricken with a serious illness at a Wuhan Laboratory just weeks before the COVID outbreak.
Fauci back peddled on previous comments where he claimed similar allegations were outlandish at best.
“If you look at the evolution of the virus in bats and what’s out there now, [the scientific evidence] is very, very strongly leaning toward this could not have been artificially or deliberately manipulated … Everything about the stepwise evolution over time strongly indicates that [this virus] evolved in nature and then jumped species,” he told National Geographic one year ago.
“Conspiracy theorists have, without evidence, linked the outbreak to the Wuhan Virology Institute, which conducts high-level research on dangerous pathogens and is located about 8 miles from the wet market in the Chinese city of Wuhan that Chinese authorities have blamed as the source of the coronavirus outbreak,” wrote Business Insider at the time.
