Attorney General Merrick Garland has made an unprecedented move by appointing David Weiss, the federal prosecutor responsible for charging President Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, as a special counsel.
Garland’s announcement elevates Weiss’s role, granting him more extensive powers than he possessed as a standard US attorney. The decision allows Weiss to investigate with greater independence and increased jurisdiction.
“Weiss has been a pivotal figure in the ongoing investigation concerning Hunter Biden in Delaware,” said a Justice Department official. “His appointment to this new role is a testament to the seriousness with which these matters are being approached.”
Garland, in a recent statement, emphasized the transparency and adherence to regulations that the appointment signifies. “I’m here today to announce the appointment of David Weiss as a special counsel consistent with the Department of Justice regulations governing such matters. In keeping with those regulations, I have today notified the designated members of each House of Congress of the appointment,” Garland stated.
Sources close to the matter revealed that Weiss had made a formal request to be elevated to the role of special counsel as recently as Tuesday.
The ongoing federal probe into Hunter Biden has unearthed concerns over potential felony tax evasion, illegal foreign lobbying, money laundering, and other possible crimes. The elevated status of Weiss as special counsel underscores the importance of the investigation and its implications.
